Freeway *UPDATE!* Art show alert!

*Update!!*
I'm gonna be in the Fruits Go Go art show, along with Gabe Swarr, Sandra Equihua, and lots of other cool artists! It's at the Monkeyhouse Gallery in Silverlake. Click here for details!

This is an older drawing that I posted on here a while back, only it's huge now. I inked and colored it on this funny crinkly old paper that did really cool things to the marker ink. Also the design on her skirt is sewn on with embroidery thread. I wanted to do more with string but ran out of time!

Here's how big it is, although now that it's in a huge frame it looks even bigger! I'm not sure I'll be at the gallery opening on Saturday, but I might be. I hope some of you LA based bloggers will stop by and take a look at all the cool art!

OK! Enough about that.
My friend Ricky (my friend who does 1930 Nitemare Theatre on Dumm Comics) loaned me an awesome movie! It's called Freeway, and aside from just liking the movie, I also got really inspired to draw the main character.

The movie stars Reese Witherspoon...it's one of her earliest roles I think, as she looks super young. These drawings are not very good caricatures of Reese...instead I just kind of wanted to have fun trying to draw a simplified version of her character in the movie.

These first ones are pretty feeble. You can tell which drawings I liked though because I colored them!

Reese is really great in this movie. She plays a screwed up teenage girl in a modern "Little Red Riding Hood" story. She's angsty but goofy, and really likable. She makes great expressions too! Kiefer Sutherland plays the big bad wolf.

You know, Reese always gets crap for her prominent chin, but her chin wasn't the most interesting feature on her face for me. She's got this great big round cranium, flared, downward pointing nostrils, and a really cool mouth that I can't actually draw. Really very cute. I cheated on drawing her lips in these drawings. When I tried to draw them like real lips, they didn't look like hers. Now I have a new way of drawing mouths! Hooray! I couldn't figure out her eyes, though. They're kind of different in every drawing.

Her expressions are great! She makes a hundred expressions per monologue. If you want practice drawing real girl expressions, go rent this movie! And get "But I'm a Cheerleader" too!

I drew all these while watching the movie, but the bloody one was just made up.

Ok, that's it for now! Now it's time for more important business!! After years of begging my boyfriend, he finally caved and let me adopt a kitten! I won't talk too much about him now (there's already enough to read here), but you can expect a huge kitten post soon!

This is what Little Ricky has to say to you!

Remember to try and always adopt pets from shelters if you can! Lots of animals need loving homes! And be nice to your animals, or I'll kick your ass!

Aw, he's so tiny--still got the uber-kitten miaou. Congratulations on your new inspiration! ; )

All my critters are adopted from the death house except for my oldest dog and Percy Dovetonsils the grey parrot. My favorite cat-buddy is in fact the brother of none other than Tom Minton's kitty-we both adopted them from the same litter, lo these many many years ago. He's 16 now.

And say! These drawings are fabulous. I agree that Reese's most imposing/coolest feature is her massive dome...check out pics of her little girl--she's truly a mini-me, and the forehead is even more exaggerated in her as she's, well, little. But wow, you were on fire with these.
Which reminds me-why no book of any sort from you this year at SD? Shame! I guess you're too busy living life etc., but really...just compile a small percentage of what's here on the blog, and you're all set. Many times over!
Have you seen Bill Presing's new book, "Bookplate Betties"? He is something else again...a master of inventive and appealing ways to pose cartoon girls. Just lovely stuff I know you would like.
And that's too long a comment from me but--thanks for updating!

^_^ little animals are soo sweet! And so hug-able hahaha!
I got a bunny myself and he is sweet too! (He's not so sweet if he eats the chair, but...well...nevermind ^_^)
He has an own "hyves" (dutch version of myspace). You probably don't understand the information on the site, but you can watch some photo's and video's if you like to.

Anyway,
Thanks a lot for the comment on my blog!
I really appreciate it :)

Those drawings of Reese are very nice.
Do you use markers to color them?

When she was young, Reese Witherspoon's chin wasn't so prominent. It seems like it keeps growing as she ages.

Another great movie she starred in was Election (1999). Reese plays a calculating over-achiever who runs for school president. During a close-up scene, as she answers the teacher's question, the film freeze frames several times. Her expressions in the still frames are hilarious. Full of furled brows and twisted mouths.

Aw, and that little kitty is soooo cute!! Someone mentioned that they turn evil when they grow up, but it's not true!! According to this webpage, they are evil even when they're young.

Picture 'freeway07' is down-pat, looks just like her!
I never heard of this movie, Kiefer as the big bad wolf, I need to see that!

Thanks pals!!

Jenny- He talks so much!! He meows whenever he's not sleeping or eating! It's so cute! I looked up Reese's daughter, she's really adorable and specific!! Maybe I'll draw her next...and I did see Bill Pressing's new book...I didn't get to buy it yet though cause I had no money for the con. He's truly amazing. I'm a huge fan of his!

Crazyharmke- Thanks! Yes, I used chartpak markers to color these. They're the best! Thanks for the cute link, too!

J.J.- Election is one of my favorite movies! She's so great in it. That webpage is hilarious, Little Ricky totally plots evil plans all day too.

I read somewhere that Reese's character in that movie was a representation of Richard Nixon.

I'd love to adopt a small animal but I live in an apartment right now. I had two cats when I was living at home and I know from experience that they would have gone nuts if they didn't have a big lawn to run around on. Locking them up in an apartment is cruel IMO.

Nice drawings, Kate. I've been meaning to see that movie Election.

I love the reese drawings, such great character in them.

The kitten is too cute. It almost made me want one, then I remembered that they grow up into cats.

I love mixed media and collage artwork. All the different materials and textures...lovely. The piece you've done for the Freeway Art Show looks great, I want to touch it. With your love of fashion I think you could do many more wonderful pieces like this.

Dude, FREEWAY is the only good movie Reese ever did. But she's definitely great fodder for expressions and drawing practice!

See Freeway 2 for an even crazier ride!

Ricky's adorable! I may have to adopt a kitty soon because my current puss, Ringo, is getting on in age. He's 12. But I am going to be giving him his own MySpace page soon.

Also, why are the girl's knees red?

Maaaan! that's such an awesome idea for a gallery show...my favorite kinds of people in Fruits are the spazzed out girls making weird hand gestures and the overly confident guys in skirts.

HEY, I'm gonna be in LA soon, so once I figure out where the hell I am, I'm gonna find your show and SEE IT!

I saw this band open for Sigur Ros a few years ago called 'Aminanima' and one of the girls in the group played the saw.

Coincidence?!
