Friends, Frenchies, and assistance needed

I'm excited cause I am working on something new and secret! Actually it's only kind of secret. If you like stories about girls then you might like it. Here are two girls who are in my kind of secret project:

Yes, it is my lovely friends Emli and Christine! They've been on my blog a lot lately. That's because they are fun to draw.

Also Jenny Lerew gave some good advice on a post where I was complaining about this drawing slump I've been in- to draw with a different kind of tool when you are in a rut. So I did some drawings of French film stars using a PENCIL!! Oh wait I lied, the first one is in pen.

I haven't drawn with a pencil in like 2 years. It took a long time to find one in the house.

Drawing with a pencil again was fun. I don't think these drawings removed me from my slump, but I like that they look pretty different from the drawings I've been posting lately. Jenny is a smart girl.

Wow, this one is weird. I'm not bothering to put the names of the actresses because the likenesses are really quite crappy.

That's all for those. OK now I need help (again).

My eye has been twitching for 3 days straight now!!!!!! It's really driving me bonkers. What have I done to deserve this?? Is there a weird concoction I need to make to force it away, or an incantation I can say at midnight? Is there a special eye twitch god who is angry and needs to be appeased? Seriously, can anyone tell me how to get rid of it? I'm going nutty here!

P.S. My hair is pretty long and red now. Time flies, doesn't it??

P.P.S. A new Skadi is up on Dumm Comics, you can see what happens when I try to draw men!

I'd say "don't stay up til midnight!"
You may just have a tired eye?
God forbid it, may be worth resting your eyes, that means, da da daaAAAAHHHH, stop drawing for a bit and or staring at a computer screen.
Best seek the advice of a proffesional, my advice always sucks!

I remeber this girl in primary school had a bad eye and to make it better, they made her wear a patch over her GOOD eye!?
Since then, if I ever get the twitch I seem to close my good eye.
Of course it goes, but who's to say that that's what helped it?

Good luck!

Katie,
The eye twitch could be caused by low potassium. Try eating a banana.

Hopefully that helps,

You need to use the eye twitch to your advantage and utter the words "Kill Clouseau...must kill Clouseau"
But seriously folks ! It's usually tired eye muscles. Take a break. Go swimming, ride a bike, get more sleep.

i get the twitch fairly often and usually over about 3 - 5 days. usually it just means i'm not getting enough sleep. i don't know if that applies to you but thats my two cents!

i love the pencilpictures... and all your pictures really!
^ ^

bye

I assumed the eye twitch is stress related. i always found it most fun when your eye starts to spasm in the middle of a conversation with someone and you both try to act like nothing is happening. good times. like nico said it usually just goes away on it's own.

btw, i have thoroughly enjoyed the weekly Skadi comic.

I had the eye twitch for almost a month. It was caused by some short term stress at my crappy day job. I guess I was really tightening the muscles in my face to much to long. Anyway I found out that if I really concentrated on relaxing my whole face it would go away. It would still twitch occasionally and eventually stopped all together. I hope that helps, relax your face and no worries.

i went to a doctor about those twitches. he asked "do you drink a lot of coffee?" i said "yes."
"STOP!" he yelled.
"It's the caffeine?"
"YES!" he yelled.

true story.

i also get a weird feeling in my chest so, to stay alive I try to drink de-caf in the afternoon.

i try.

good luck.

Those drawings are awesome.

Aren't the eye twitches symptoms of stress or lack of sleep? Maybe a vacation is in order?

Nice drawings, Katie! I had an eye twitch for months. It was driving me crazy, and eventually it just went away on its own. I read up on it a bit, and apparently they can be chronic (lasting forever) in which case some people get botox injected into the area around the eye, which freezes the muscles. But then you get creepy frozen emotionless eyes. It can also be due to stress - try taking a couple days off and relaxing. Hopefully it will just go away by itself!

Hi Katie. I love the characters that you are designing. To find out that you haven't used a pencil in two years! I always use pencils. pencils let me do that free flow of shapes and weights that I need. Then I out line the work in paint. Well your a pro, I don't need to bore you with that stuff. The eye twitching. That diffidently is stress. I myself have restless leg syndrome. I understand the twitching problem. It will eventually go away. I know that the more you let it bug you, the longer it will take to subside. You have a busy life and career. Please don't fall into the trap of taking medication for the twitch. It make seem like a small thing at the time, but one thing does lead to another.
Take care: Michael

Hi Katie,
I'm an old friend of Eddie's.
I love your work and lurk here occasionally. I've read that muscle spasms and twitching is usually the result of dehydration. especially if you're not originally from here it can be hard to get your body to acclimate to the weather. I know coming from Jersey, I never drink enough water, back there it was moist enough to not need to. Besides, you who wants to drink the water in Jersey anyway?
Anyway, here. I get headaches and sometimes cramps in my leg from lack of water. It being so hot maybe you're just not drinking enough water?

I'm so glad yer out of your slump!!!!!!! These heads are great- I think I recognize some!

My eye used to twitch when I was REALLY nervous, so maybe it's related? Maybe just relax, like REALLY relax, like foot massage/back massage/long bath relax??

I also had an eye twitching problem, go cold turkey on any caffeine and get more sleep.

Good drawings,

I love how you can capture's someone's spirit by casting their unique qualities in the forefront. Very lovely indeed.

Have you been drinking too much caffeine and staring into the computer screen? This is what usually causes twitching for me. If I were you I'd try to lay off the caffeine or reduce it and do less staring onto the screen by taking breaks every half-hour or so. This is what does the trick for me. Can't wait to see your new photos w/ red hair, I bet you'd look lovely although I love your blond look already :)

I hear ya katie, I had to bring out ye olde inking brush and draw on some old cheese paper... - i love that lil' twitch drawing of you... weird thing is, mine has been twitching...everytime I look at a computer screen... hmmmmm...
hope yer well, & nice Skadi comic! -she's got the sweetest ass!

I second the bananas suggestion, it works for me!

Nico said...

aww, that "Oh I'm so sad" drawing makes me so sad! ;_;

Though caffeine could be a contributor, stress is usually right up there as a key causal agent when it comes to eye twitching. In addition to rest, it helps to get your eyes away from ALL light, and try not using them for at least 8 full hours. Listen to music or something that doesn't add to your visual load. If you're taking certain allergy medicines, it could cause eye twitch (and heart palpitations), too.

Hello!
there's a supplement called Bilberry that helps open up the blood vessels in the eyes. i had similar twitches (sort of felt like tiny pops) and it helped.
even in a slump your artwork is amazing and inspiring and full of life! don't ever stop!

Jenny Lerew said...

Gosh Katie-I feel so proud! A mere mention of tool-switching and I feel like Glinda: "but you've always had the power to get outta yer slump, Dorothy" And how!
Beautiful...I know all the faces, I know I do...but because I'm stupid and have a shite memory unlike my Pete(BIG major nouvelle vague man and afficionado of early Bardot and Godard films), I can't think of all the names...isn't the top a young Jeanne Moreau? Boy I love her face. Have you seen Umbrellas Of Cherbourg or Young Girls of Rochefort?
Anyway--! Killer stuff. But I believe you could dip a stick in ink, hold it behind your back and get amazing results.

As for The Twitch-! I had that first at WB(my first job),working for Eddie. Stress!
No, seriously--I assumed that it happens from eye strain--specifically, STARING at the paper for long periods and worrying.
Funnily enough, now that I work on a cintiq I haven't had it, but I used to get it every so often--probably about 3x in my career-and it would last for a month or two, sometimes consecutive days...it's true, basically it'll just go away by itself. I don't think I did anything special except try to ignore it and get up & take restful breaks, whatever those might be.
I know it's a lot of boring unnecessary detail but I thought you should know it does always go away-never heard of anyone who had it nonstop forever-but it is SO annoying when it starts to tug at your eye!

Well I'm afraid to say that I had an eyelid twitch that started in December and didn't end til April. Then it travelled to my nose for a few weeks then dissapeared. It would happen randomly, sometimes hours in between, sometimes only ten minutes. You may be doomed.

By the way, the new Skadi comics are awesome. I like the fact that the dragon's head is fat, flesh colored and bloated now.

Josh Heisie

PS: Bigshots like you don't use pencils, huh? Don't need to erase anything, huh? Aren't we FANCY!!!

Forbes Browne said...

Seems like most people have posted about the twitch already but I'll add my penny's worth. I had an eyelid flutter type of thing. It was caused by a little stress and lack of sleep. My Dad is a doctor and he told me that although you are conscious of it twitching, the eyelid flutters so quickly that the average person doesn't even notice. I suggest more sleep/relaxing and sunglasses LOL.

Hi Katie, Just discovered your blog via MySpace--your art is terrific.

The eye twitch could be stress, the haphazard of being a cartoonist with bills to pay.

Wishing you geat success with the secret project & hope your eye feels better!!!

Great idea to try a differnt material when your in a rut!!

ahaha and member when I was emailing you a couple years ao with that eye twitch that wouldn't go away, and I was starting to thinkit never would?! And you assured me that it would! Yeahhh.... it did:) hehe, we must be like psychically connected though, because yesterday I was getting an eye twitch again for the first time in a loooonnggg time!! i guess the only way to get rid of it is to relaxxxxxxxxx:)

Katie said...

Thanks everyone, I think the twitch must be from weird sleep patterns and stress, and probably not caffeine as I don't drink very much coffee or soda. Also, what has potassium besides bananas? I hate those things!

Michael V- I feel bad for neglecting my pencils for so long! And don't worry, I'm not a big fan of taking meds...I'm just gonna try to relax and see if it goes away.

Craig P- THANK YOU!! I will get some of that stuff!

Jenny- I'll have to look up the actress I was referencing to answer your question! Maybe I'll post up all the names when I'm less lazy. :) I will check out that movie too...I'm pretty ignorant with old movies, I know I'm missing out!

Josh- LOL!!! Ha ha ha ha, the funny thing is, I make a million mistakes when I draw with pencils cause I get intimidated! I like drawing with those cheapo ball point pens cause it's less scary! And I still make a million mistakes, I just hide them in the garbage can. :)

Kristy- Oh no!!!! What if that is like my undiscovered superhero trait- to spread eye twitches like the plague!! I hope yours goes away fast!

Katie

that eye thing happens to me when I'm stressed out and tired.
Go to bed at a decent time and stop stressing(if you are)!

Those eye twitches can be really ugly and annoying, especially when you have to endure them for several days. Just relax, take a good rest for few days (with lot of sleep), and make regular breaks during your drawing or computer sessions, at least every half hour. One thing that helps me when I feel any kind of eye strain (caused by comp.screen, drawing, lightbox, etc.) is to look out of the window and focus my eyes to some far away objects for a minute or two.
And these Frenchie drawings look fabulous, full of personality and spirit. I can recognize some of the actresses you portrayed here. The new Skadi rules too!

rachel jean vickers said...

eh, yeah..that does suck about the eye thing, i'm sure it will go away soon. it's like hiccups, ya know?

your drawings made me smile, very beautiful!

I'm looking at all of your sketch pages of French actresses and I'm guessing those are Brigitte Bardot pics in pages #1, #6 and #7. I believe that's supposed to be Catherine Deneuve from "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" in #4 (a favourite film of mine, by the way). I think you're on the right track with Bardot but Deneuve could use more attention. Watch some video of her and notice her distinct jawline. Please post more studies of these lovely French actresses, Katie!

Good stuff! Especially the pencil stuff.

The eye twitch could be caused by lack of sleep. Remedy - get more sleep. :)

Stop using the computer! Go look at some wildlife. Get enough sleep! Eat your bananas.

I guarantee that your twitch will go away.

This is probably too late but you can get potassium supplements at Trader Joe's. Also, gently massage your eyelid and surrounding muscles when it happens - just be sure you put down that pencil first. A warm compress and some Visine Advance Allergy (it has an antihistamine) helps a lot. Good luck!
