Cintiq work doodles

I don't currently have a working scanner, so right now the only drawings I can post are ones that are drawn directly into the computer. That means work doodles! At Nickelodeon they have us drawing on cintiqs, which are really cool. Most of these are crappy doodles drawn mindlessly while on the phone or taking breaks.

My pal Fred showed me a way to animate using painter, so I've been playing with that a little. It doesn't work that well though...you can't time it or anything. Or maybe I'm just using it wrong. My favorite failed animation attempt is this girl dancing and playing the guitar. I would have posted the actual animation, but as I said it didn't work that well and popped all weird. Here are a few of the cuter poses from it though.
Right now I'm working on a show called El Tigre, which will be airing on Nick on March 3rd. My favorite character to draw on the show is cute blue haired Frida, designed by the lovely Sandra Equihua ( http://www.fulanita.com/ )! If you're curious about the show, go check it out on the nickelodeon website! Here is my own version of Frida:
Sorry I haven't got anything too interesting to post! I'm keeping most of my personal projects secret for the time being. Also, I'm getting pretty tired of just drawing one loopy pose after another on blank paper. I've been trying to get better at drawing functional drawings, which means I have to work on stuff like construction and perspective and crap. Those practice drawings would be boring to look at, and my progress is slow. So it might be a while before I have anything entertaining to show!

Ok, bye!

These are so freakin' adorable!!! I had a panic/heart attack after clicking on your name to see that you had some new stuff up.

The girl playing guitar and dancing is so alluringly cute!!

Let's do something again soon!

love your work. I'm interning at nick and totally thought this other "Katie" was you and said, "hi" like a huge dork and it wasn't you and then I ate a muffin because there's a lot of them there.

Anyway now I hope I don't see you around because I doubt I could handle that much humilitation in a single month.

Ooohhh... thanks for the eye candy! Your doodles are beautiful!

It's so refreshing to hear you say that _you_ need to work on construction. It makes me feel like less of an idiot!

Your stuff is wonderful!

Sorry I haven't got anything too interesting to post!

I find this line of yours almost offensive!

But I'm insecure too, now i've tasted being on the other side. People always want to beat me up when i flush my drawings down the toilet. Not that i'm in anyway as good as you.

Gabriel said...

ok, i got curious about the guitar girl. I wanted to see her move, i wish you had insisted on that.

i wanna work on El Tigre, they are working on it up in dublin!!!!

Katie said...

Thanks guys!

Phil- I'm glad someone liked the mysterious poo poo dancer. I like her too!

Kali- Yes!! We will play again soon!

Stone- how do you like the internship so far?? Don't be too sad. I embarrass myself on a daily basis! I've only met the other Katies at Nick briefly or from a distance, but you will know which one is me because I am the weird-looking one. :)

Gabriel- ha, that's cool that you animated that, although it's missing a bunch of poses. I didn't want to post my actual animation since it pops and doesn't look very good, but I liked the individual drawings. Animating is hard! :)

WOOHOO Katie has a new post!

Your drawings on a cintiq make them seem more...clean, or maybe you have recently started to draw initially more clean. I don't know you well at all so I can only guess.

I wish I worked at Nickelodeon!

Heya Katie!!! I like your digital drawings, are they with a tablet or with a mouse?

I sometimes use both lol

Hey yeah I love how you draw cute girls in their side profiles with those cute onion-head shapes. ahhh!

your drawings are equivilant to eating mounds of yummy candy/chocolate/something goooood and not gettin' sick! Yeah how cool is that?

*runs away now*

My goodness, you're popular. No post in a while and over 20 comments. Of course, really lovely stuff!

I like how you're using the solid shapes of color in the first image. Lots of cute doodles. Who's the poo-poo girl? Do you know her? I'd like to set her up on a date with my friend.

I'm liking all that Cintiq-ey goodness :)

Be sure to keep Miss Mindy in line during tap classes. She's a trouble-maker.

aw common please pose the animation with pops! i LOVE pops! MORE MORE! please!?

David Germain said...

So you finally have access to a cintiq hey? I hear those work great. It's kind of like drawing on electronic paper am I right?

I know from experience that Wacom tablets are awkward to use at first. It's like looking away from your paper to draw. Keeripes.

Incidently, is Nickelodeon hiring?

macaronni said...

Very Cute! :)

I actually got to work on a cintiq a while ago.. Very warm...

Gets really hot afterwards :P

Acetate said...

When you draw on the cintiq can you see what you are drawing actually appear on the tablet itself, or do you have to look at a monitor? I hate that.

Wow, awesome doodles, Katie!
The guitar girl animation drawings are amazing!

NateBear said...

YAYeeee!! I can't draw this good on a computer. Probably not even on paper. I'm going to look up what the hell a cintiq is....

I also tried doing some stuff on painter. It's soOOo counter-intutive. It seems like that part of the program is an afterthought gimmick that they haven't bothered to improve since the first version. I remember trying to use Painter to animate when I was 15 and it had exactly the same features. GGod forbid you try editing or copy-pasting drawings from somewhere else.

Wow, I am so Late to this commenting thing, ha ha.

Well, everybody else has said everything already, just to sound different: um....these are bad? ha ha, they are rockin'. I agree that you do need to start working on putting some more sperspective in there and a bit more construction, but you're a clever sort and I know you can do it if you but try.

Congrats on the job at nick, can't wait to see this new el tigre show when it is played on the tv two years from now down here.

cheers

Katie,

You mentioned trying to animate in Painter. Let me suggest a program called TVPaint Animation

TVPaint is made for animation and the advanced version (TVPaint PRO) even has a traditional style Ex-sheet. Both versions have a free demo that you can download and use for 30 days. It's not the most intuitive software ever, so expect to spend some time learning all the bells and whistles, but the basic animation mode is pretty easy to get up to speed on. You can add frames, subtract frames, so timing is under your control. If you don't want to go the vector route (Flash or ToonBoom) then TVPaint is the best choice for animating directly (paperless) into computer, IMO.

Good gravy you must be busy! What ever course of action you take towards animation I am sure you will do fine. I was curious if it is fine that I post a picture you drew me once on my blog? Good luck in all you do!

The girl playing the guitar is so cute, reminds me of an ex who looked just like that. Great character drawings, love the movement in them.

Totally jealous of people with talent, I just get to blow things up and break people's arms off (make-up and digital fx).
