GIANT MOUTH...post

My two favorite things to draw are mouths and legs, but for some reason I feel a little funny talking about them here! I can't tell if I'm giving away "secrets," or just stating the obvious! Anyhow, since people have asked for it and I'm always obsessing over them, here is the mouth post!

There are a few things I always look at first when drawing someone's mouth...does she have that little "lip bulb" on the top lip (I can't remember who coined that phrase, but it's a good one!), or is there just a little hole? Does the mouth point down or up when making a nuetral expression? Is the top lip bigger, or the bottom one?
(Also, I REALLY like overbites and underbites, and I'm not going to even get started on teeth here...)

All those things change how a person makes expressions, too. I've really been wanting to do some photo experiments- I want to take pictures of all my girlfriends making the same mouths shapes, and compare them all to one another. This would be great for animating lip synch, and just comparing the vastness of human shapes in general. Maybe I'll do a post about that later, and people can help me out with supplying pictures!

Here's a funny observation about mouth construction- you know when you're constructing a drawing, and you draw the center line, and you draw the eyes and nose and chin and whatever all lining up accordingly? The mouth doesn't fit on that line! It actually sticks out, like a weird human muzzle. I tried to draw it here, in sort of an exaggerated way:
My friend Robert Cory pointed this out to me a long time ago, but he used a much more vulgar way of describing this phenomenon. Maybe sometime he'll get a blog and describe it in his own terms for you!

Here's another one: in a three quarter view of a mouth, the part of the lips that are farther away from you are thicker. This is kind of hard to draw without making the face look like there are nasty worms on it. John K. is really good at it though. His bad catholic school girl drawings influenced me a whole lot. I tried to draw some here:
Well, I can't really think of much else to say! It's one thing to make observations and attempt to put it on paper, but then trying to describe it in words is even harder! So...here are some faces that I drew tonight while becoming completely fixated on drawing weird human orifices!
I know someone's going to call me "weird" for this!

HA! I'll just describe it on your Blog (my blog is private). The mouth is the asshole of the face and it has muscle and protrudes forward. Then if you imagine shitting teeth you can imagine an overbite (which only the most attractive women have). It's important to think of eyes, noses, and mouths as organic shapes pushing forward and not lines on an egg. If you didn't know it already, Katie is one of the most dedicated artists I know, we have talked about art theories until the wee hours. She really knows her stuff.

I have a real hard time drawing 3/4 view mouths, but front views usually turn out pretty good. This was a very informative post! Thanks!!!

About the farther away parts of the lips being thicker: when you say it like that it sounds weird, but the drawing shows you're obviously right. Why is that? Maybe it is that the lips kind of extend themselves to the inside of the mouth?

Holy crap! What a present to wake up to! Thanks Katie, your contribution to my education in cartooning is unmeasurable, I feel like I owe you money after a post like this ;)

All the genious are always a little bit weird ! I'm also a little bit weird ! A different kind of weirdeness comparing to you. Where is my cartoon ? Should I beg you for it ? It's the 3rd or 4th time I'm asking you darling !

Great post!

I happen to have a girl mouth, if you need pics. :)

Weird is good. These mouths are "mouth-watering". Keep up the good work.

One of those girls has a sort of vampire tooth, similar to one of my own teeth. This brightened my day.

Thanks for sharing these mouth theories - your notes and observations are really helpful!

While reading this I was touching my lips to see how much they protrude compared to everything else- scary! Very informative post- lips are always fun to draw. And to see if you're as weird as me, when drawing yourself, do you amp your lips up waaay more than they really are? I know I do! Just curious :)

YOU'RE WEIRD!

(...couldn't resist:)

AWESOME POST thanks

The vocal minority might cry 'weird', the rest of us are happy because you talk about something real, oK?

Notes:
1) Oversized vampirey-bitey incisors are teh sexy

2) Patricia Arquette!!1

You wierd.

Not weird at all Katie. Pretty interesting actually. I'm curious about one thing. What exactly is this "lip bulb" thing? Keep up the good work.

We're all weird. C'mon.

I've found, that animated girls with lips loos totally natural, but guy cartoon humans with lips looks weird.

It'sthe rule of the cartoon universe it seems.

nice post Katie!! I love your work and it completely inspired me to try and do my own girl pictures. I just need to keep on practicing!

The chubby far side of this pips might just come from foreshortning, or maybe you don't see then thin out because of the 3/4 turn, so they "seem" fatter...?

actually you kick ass for this

Radical! I've been waiting for this!

Awesome post!!!

Hey Katie,

I remember when you used to refuse to draw lips on girls at all!

Now you are the master of them!

I wonder how many other cartoonists are as jealous as me of your work.

These are great.

But wanna hear about the teeth. I was thinking about how much I liked the way you drew the teeth on that trio of singing girls just the other day.

So yes, teeth.

This is perfect! Thanks Katie...mouths are one of the things I am WORST at. I just can't seem to make interesting ones. They're flat and weird.

these are great tips

I'd better get cracking on copying your drawings!

Hi Katie

I love your drawings. I can not wait for the new Ren & Stimpy Lost Episodes DVD to come out so I can see the drawings you did for the Ren & Stimpy cartoon "Naked Beach Frenzy".

Jesse Oliver

P.S. What is your all time favorite Ren & Stimpy cartoon?

My God! Katie!! you just saved my life! This is the exact information I needed for drawing mouths! I suck at mouths and your the queen of cartoon girl mouths! I should try drawing some girls one day! LOVIN' IT! This really helps, Katie! Thanks!

I think lips are a huge personality trait a lot of cartoons conveniently leave off. The line or two they give for lips really is a lip off. Rip off!

It's true though, it's a small piece of evidence of what's become so generic, lifeless, and formulaic in our animation. The detail and life of a drawing becomes factory-esque and just gradually rubs out altogether.

Not all studios though. Pixar though CG and quite the big guys around town, still have lip action going on. A great scene running through my head from Finding Nemo is Dory saying "Mr grumpy face!" with her lips smudged together and perked out. Here it is..

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/9093/dorylips9kg.jpg

And that's personality! Something that's really makes a character feel alive and seperate but is completely unutilized. I see it all the time in your posts and just mention the 'life' they have, as that's an element not commonly seen.

Dory's overbite is an important part of her smile too. She uses it to suck the bottome lip under too, and give a good worried face.

http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/6530/dorybite1az.jpg

I think it's such an unnoticed thing though in all animation and drawing, not just lips, but drawing formulas vs drawing 'new' and 'thinking' drawings. Not the attribute of thinking in a character, but in construction and personality of a character. Waking your brain up and thinking before the pencil stroke or design shape. Which kicks me back to John K's post about designers.

Anyway, in danger of walking on very familiar ground, I'll just say this is an inspiring and perfect weird post. :P

The muzzle sticking out is something that I'll definitely remember when drawing, or at least won't forget long. :)

Great info, Katie, this kind of stuff is awesome. Thanks! :)

Technically, every post on John K.'s blog is a "Giant Mouth post". ;) (Hee hee! Just kidding).

Those are some great looking lips. They look like Mort Drucker lips really. Has he been taking lessons from you? I guess if you were working at Mad Magazine in the early '60's he would've.

Awesome stuff.

Quite a compliment from John! I'm jealous too. Great post.tlw

Oh my GOSH this is perfect! You are so incredible. Aside from the mouths,(which are very impressive) the drawings are amazing!

Did you just randomly draw these girls or look at pictures?

You have completed my life. This is all I need to live now. Thank you!!!!! from the bottom of my heart. haha now I sound weird.

PS Katie is such a cute name

Aaron Kurmey (DDM) said...

Don't even want to count how many times people have said weird in these comments.

That's really good with the mouths though. I always just tossed them onto my faces without really thinking about it. But I'll give some of these a try later!

Thanks!

Maybe you could drawing Pattie Boyd's mouth. She is a model from the 60s and pretty much my most favorite person in the whole world! Besides, I want to see if your drawings resemble mine. haha.

Are their any tutorials on drawing assholes so I can put Cory's theories into practice?

Elizabeth said...

It's all about lips but you just saved me a LOT of worry when you mentioned drawing the lines to line up the face and eyes. I was afraid the book I bought on drawing (anime) faces was using a technique "real" artists would scoff at, but if you use them, then horray! it's not really pathetic then.

Wow! You are such a great cartoonist! Most cartoonsists don't do much variation in cartoon girl's mouths, but you do a great job. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is a really big help for someone like me... who sucks at mouths and somewhat realistic looking eyes (you see, staring at Jhonen Vasquez art for hours on end limits you to using only circles these days, and that cripples the hand immensely.)

Thanks for the help, Katie.

Please do an eye theory post! PLEEEASE.

Please?
