8-bit Show

Hi again!

Well, everyone's posting their paintings and drawings for the 8-bit show that's coming up...hopefully I won't get in trouble for posting these. I guess I can't if everyone else is doing it too!
Since I did Nintendo girls last year, this year I just did a few Links. These are really small, about 5 x 7. I think they turned out pretty cute!
I hope someone will praise me for drawing boys instead of girls? :)

Anyhow, I'm going to Nevada to visit my family for Easter, so I won't be posting any more drawings until I get back. OH YEAH! Don't forget to Visit the 8-bit opening! It's coming up next week...

Gallery 1988
Tuesday the 18th

If you guys are near Hollywood, then come see it! I might be there, but I'm not sure, since I'll be driving 8 hours that day to come home, and I may be tired and cranky. But hopefully some of you guys will go and have fun and see the cool art!

Those Links are awesome!!, I remember your 8-bit girls from last year and was hoping you would be doing more in the series. You should post your Samus and Princess Peach for those who haven't seen them.

Wow...completely awesome. The zelda music was playing in my head as I looked at the second one.

But of course! I shoulda known not to believe you when you said it was hard to draw boys!

Those are every bit as lively and fun and cute as your girl drawings.

YAY BOYS! great work!

Hi, I'm a cartoonist(or at least trying to be one) and I'm always seeing these cartoons with these great stylized paintings like yours.
This may sound like a total newb question(and undoubtable it is), but what sort of paints do you use to color these. Are they water color, acrylic, marker or maybe digital even....

Sorry for the newb question but I needs to know!!! :)

There are animators here in Chicago that are doing artwork for this show. Was there a call for artwork? How did you find out about this show? Thank in advance

Holy Cripes these are amazing Katie. Who cares if they are boys or girls when you make them look this good and fill them so full of cartoony life.

Now what I really want to see is a new Zelda cartoon done in your style.

Samuel K said...

I've always liked to think of Link as an absolute boob. He never talks and he just seems awkward and kind of backwards and stupid. That first drawing of him is so funny because it kind of captures the way I view Link. He's just got this insane blank grin on his face as he's running away from danger, brandishing his sword like he doesn't know what he's doing.

You got me to laugh. Thank you!

Gabriel said...

Awesome, now we want detailed explanations, how exactly did you do that? Are those colors markers again??
Congratulations, you can do boys too! Huh, you know what i mean.

Nic said...

Oh man, those are great!

But I gotta say, Link almost looks like a girl, usually, so it's almost the same as drawing a girl.

:P

Great Stuff, Katie!

I really like your delineation of line.
I know and I speak for MANY when I ask , what specific name brands pens do you guys use to get that line quality. No artists give much of an answer, I don't know what the big secret is , I mean you still need skill and practice.... Can you help.
I know for FACT lots of cartoonists need some cold facts on tools.
I would really apreciatte it!

SO COOL! I love Zelda! The one with the octorocks is really awesome! They look so neat, and so does Link! I've always liked his original brown shirt, though.. why did they ever get rid of it!? You CAN draw guys!

Hey Katie, have you ever played the NES game StarTropics?

Wonderful!! Man I love Zelda.
I gotta say, I've been pouring over your blog recently and you've been a huge inspiration. I tried to do caricatures when John K kept daring people to but wasn't very good, and your stuff's so fabulous so I said to myself, I wanna be like Katie Rice-except with dudes! I'm still way too uptight and not cartoony but here are some drawings from House-

So I'd just like to say thank you, I love your stuff.(I linked mr k these too but i don't think he saw or maybe he didn't like em)
Thanks again

Those are very cute, Katie.

I don't know who they are 'cause I've never played a video-game but I'll bet they look a lot better than the originals!

Not only can you draw boys, you can draw blobby red things! Those are my favorite characters on the pictures.

What comes out of their hoses?

Gabe Swarr said...

Beautiful, just as I thought...

MORE! MORE! MORE!

topher said...

Yeah those blobby red things are rad! And yay! You drew a boy! See? I knew you could do it! Now get back to drawing more girls!

I couldn't think of what those maonsters were called till I bothered to look at waht Katie had used for the filename. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octorok

Nice job!

These are great Katie! Nice spin on this heterosexual pixie... ;P I especially like the red bat in the cave pic - it catches my eye eveytime.

The gallery is such a great idea! Everyone's submissions I've seen are top notch. I'm still very much a digital artist but it was still loads of fun. I just really love seeing different artists' take on the same theme. Nicey nice!

Rocks.

Hey John, you should get Katie to show you The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. The enemy characters are really well designed and animated! I think you might like it, based on what I've read on your blog. Anyway:

Hey Katie

This is completely off topic, and a little random... but these photographs of the young Goldie Hawn really remind me of your drawings! She definitely has that funny/cute thing you talk about.

link

You could do some drawings based on these photographs. It's weird to see Goldie Hawn like this. I didn't realise she used to be such a cutie!

I'm going to stop talking about the young Goldie Hawn on a complete stranger's blog now. See Ya

Hmmm... I could have sworn I replied already... Oh well.

Katie, were you inspired by Shigero Miyamoto's Windwaker game? It was very cartoony, but I still disliked the game. Gameplay wise, anyway.

You know what's funny? I was playing Super Mario bros. today, and I thought of your drawings and this 8-Bit show, and I thought, maybe if Katie likes these old video games from the golden age of video games, and she's friends with John K, who loves the golden age of animation, does John like video games from the golden age of video games? I figured he's too old for video games since he's a child of the 50's and 60's, but now I see he's never played a vidoe game before! (!!!!) I bet he'd like golden age games.

I was also contemplating the difference between the golden age of animation and video games. Animation declined from the golden age substantially, but video game graphics improved from its golden age. Substantially. So it's probably harder to convince someone that golden age games are better than new ones, than it is with animation.

Let's see your Samus Aran and Princess Toadstool, Katie! Samus Aran is SEXY!

John, those red guys are octorocks. They shoot rocks. Play anything made on NES or SNES... or you can play "pull my pants up way too high" :P:P:P

That excitebike thing is SICK! I love that game!

Katie, what are your favourite video games?

Hey I just found your Samus Aran! It's so effing cool!

i like the bat silhouettes in the 2nd one too!

great work!

these are winners.

i don't really like most nintendo fan artwork, but of course you did it cartoony and make it good.

Great stuff. I love your energetic free flowing style. Sorry about your eight hour drive, sounds like you must be driving all the way up to Reno, NV or thereabouts. I know that drive all to well.

Jenny said...

It's not the "boys" or the "girls" that count, it's the drawing; if you had to, for the sake of a job, do los of men you know you you would, but this is your blog, and of all places this should be the one where you draw nothing but cute girls, if that's what you feel like that day(or all days!). : )

I love these guys, btw. But I wax philoophical about the guy thing because, of course, I feel the same way--that I should draw more guys. Heh. "Should"? Aw, nuts to it! Everyone just loves to see your stuff.

No wonder I will only be your friend in the real world and won't include you in the MySpace realm of existence! You will NEVER be a MySpace buddy of mine!
...we're still going to have a sleepover when I come out to L.A. in a week, right? Hopefully we can get Christine to join us...I think that it would be much more fun than seperate sleepovers. Mario party is more fun with more people! So is alcohol, karaoke and pirates!

Oh hell yes. "I can't wait to bomb some dodongoes!" (You get a cookie if you can guess where that line is from.) Cartoony Link kicks ass.

One of the things that's really quite striking is how cartoony Wind Waker was. It wasn't just a case of slapping a cell-shading algorithm on the 3D models and saying, "Look, kids! Anime!" The characters are cartoonishly designed, both statically and in motion. Look carefully and you will see some squash and stretch.

Wind Waker is currently my favorite 3D Zelda for this reason. It's gorgeous and enthralling precisely because it's like a cartoon you can play.

i can't even begin to tell you how many hours i wasted away on this game growing up. it's still one of my all time favorites. i still remember all the kids bringin in the maps & nintendo power to the cafeteria in school growin' up.

Katie said...

Well, I never made it to the art show...I hope those of you who went had fun! I will post my drawings from the first 8-bit show soon.

I'll answer some questions and hopefully the people who asked willl see them...

anonymous and s.g.a - I use all sorts of different markers, including prismacolor, copic, and chartpak. If you go the art store and visit the marker section, I probably have a few colors in every brand. Chartpak are my favorite right now, because they're so fun to layer and they make the colors nice and even. But they're stinky and bleed like crazy! They're also expensive. :P Most of my drawings are drawn with cheap ballpoint pens or marker pens. When I try and ink them all nice, I use the same black marker pens (no specific brands, sorry!) for the thick lines, and Microns for cleaning the lines up. i hope that's helpful!

k mcleod- I knew the guy who set up the art show, Jon Gibson, from a while back...he asked me to be in it, so I'm not sure how other people were included.

Gabriel- Yup, I used the same markers I always use! I had to be more careful though...

James Harvey- Thanks for that link!!! I have always loved Goldie...I think she's so cute! I will do some drawings of her like you suggested!

Evan- Yep, I think that was from the first art show...there was a lot of really cool stuff from it. There's even a book out now of all the art...if anyone sees it in stores, let me know, cause that would be exciting!

Jorge Garrido- I was certainly somewhat inspired by Windwaker...how come you didn't like the gameplay? I thought it was really fun! I wish there were more bad guys to fight though, and that some of the islands were bigger with more to explore. As for your question about John and video games, I don't know what he would like! I once showed him the "Minish Cap" Zelda game for DS, and he seemed to think it was pretty cute looking, but was confused about what the hell was going on. I tend to forget that if you're not a person who plays a lot of video games, the idea of "oh, you obviously have to smash the pots and crap in this person's house because you might find bombs or arrows inside" isn't entirely logical. But the first thing everyone who DOES play video games does when they get a new adventure type game is try to smash everything to collect money and other weird items. :)

Oh, and my favorite games are all the ones that have to do with Zelda or Mario, and I like Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. Oh, and Cubivore! That game is the best! I like games like Resident Evil too, but I'm too retarded to be able to shoot anything. I always just watch Luke play it.

For all of you guys who liked Windwaker, I totally agree! I've played it like 3 times, but never quite finished the main boss at the end...ha!

jelle said...

Wow, these are absolutely amazing!

I went to the 8 bit screening and bought your peice if Link running. I love it! thanks for making it!

>>>Oh, and my favorite games are all the ones that have to do with Zelda or Mario, and I like Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon.

ANIMULE CROSSINK REPRESENT!!! But Mario pwns everything ever made. including Sonic. I'd say that Mario Bros 2 (japanese version, or the lost levels on SNES) is the best game ever created. I couldn't get very far with it, though. That's how good it is!

I hated windwaker because the style was cartoony but it didn't fit Zelda. But the gameplay was same old same old which i disliked. I played that Zelda game for gameboy where it was two games in one, like Pokemon and I almost fell asleep. (Why didn't I jsut stop playing it? And how did it make me PHYSICALLY tired? :P:P:P) Then again, I'm not really a fan of RPG's. My favourite games are from the 8-bit and 16-bit era, but I also like shooter games and action/adventure games like Metroid Prime, Super Smash Bros and any fighting game. As long as it's fast paced and destructibe.

>>As for your question about John and video games, I don't know what he would like! I once showed him the "Minish Cap" Zelda game for DS, and he seemed to think it was pretty cute looking, but was confused about what the hell was going on.

People that old probably played with rocks when they were kids. I don't believe he's a fan of toys, they probably werent even invented when he was a kid... jajaja! XD XD XD XD

Seriously folks, take my dad (who's younger than John). I tried to get him to play Smash Bros once and he couldn't get the hang of it. But I showed him a racing game and he got that easier. You have to grow up with them, I think. But with the classics! Not that newfangled Warcraft crap. (I still consider WoW a videogame)

Oh, you know what's the most cartoony game ever? Duck Hunt! Show him that! It's so simple and fun! I love that dog! Actually, I HATE that stupid dog! >:# >:#

Whoah I gotta learn to pare these comments down...
